It’s hot. We know. But having lived in all-year-round summer weather, we’ve learnt how to beat the heat, and we’re sharing it with you. It’s called ‘Happy Hour.’ We’ve bar-hopped and got drunk in the search for the 10 happiest hours in the Central Business District (CBD) and we’ve done it all for you. Hell, it’s not easy, but someone’s got to do it. So go on, relish the fruits of our labour.
Constantly bustling with activity, here you’ll find a well-dressed business crowd ready to let loose over post-work drinks. It is one of the hippest watering holes in the CBD, exuding summer holiday vibes with its fun and colourful décor. Happy Hour here runs daily from 4pm to 8pm, with 1-for-1 deals on both draft and bottled beer, house pour spirits and selected wines. What’s more, ‘Toss the Boss Tuesday’ gives you a chance drink for free! From 6:30pm to 7:30pm, simply toss a coin and make your call – heads or tails. If you win, your round of draft beers and house pour spirits is on the house!

Taking over the space that used to house East 8 is the newly opened alfresco bar Beer Tavern. This spacious 60-seater features a host of fun games – ideal when drinking – foosball, darts, pool, and even beer pong! Apart from an all-night-long Happy Hour (30% off all drinks) on Mondays, that ensures you won’t be having any Monday blues, there’s also 20% off wines on Tuesdays, $12 glasses of prosecco, moscato and rosés on Wednesdays, beer bucket promotions on Thursdays, and a $45 liquid buffet available for your drunken stupor from 6pm to 8pm on Fridays. Watch out, you just might get wasted here (unless that’s the plan).

Plush, sleek and cosy, this lounge is a hidden gem in Tanjong Pagar, a slice of heaven you will want to take respite in – and we’re not just referring to the cool air conditioning. This is where to come for live music (from 7pm daily) and martinis. Happy Hour starts early – from opening till 8pm every day – where martinis and spirits cost less than a tenner. If that doesn’t sound good enough, they also offer six martinis at a mere $50. We promise not to judge if you drink the bar dry.

If cocktails are your poison of choice, look no further. Hopscotch boasts the best Happy Hour for cocktails in the CBD: 1-for-1 cocktails from 4pm to 8pm daily, so you won’t burn a hole in your wallet. Begin with ‘Welcome to Singapore’ or ‘Jewel of Maxwell,’ both of which feature bright and refreshing flavours pertinent to rising above the heat. If you’re feeling like something unique, dip your toe into some chicken soup for the ‘Alcoholic’s Soul’ or try the ‘Thyme Me Up & Pep Me Down.’ The former is a warm, soothing vodka concoction of cherry tomatoes boiled in chicken stock to extract the natural sweetness, peppered with fragrances of fresh coriander and sesame. The latter adds an earthy, botanical softness to the classic martini, made with shiitake-infused Tanqueray dry gin.

An oldie but a goodie, local rooftop bar Loof has withstood the test of time – 11 years to be exact. Decked in 80s décor, the bar is an eclectic mix of colourful high tables, stools and cane chairs. Loof is best known for its signature music nights ‘Wax On Wax Off’ – showcasing a selection of local veteran DJs. On weekdays, Happy Hour starts from 5pm, where the early bird catches the worm – house pour wine and spirits cost $5 from 5pm to 5.59pm, $6 from 6pm to 6.59pm, and $7 from 7pm to 8pm. Also, $10 draft beers are available from 5pm to 8pm. You’ll be glad you came up!

My Awesome CafÉ
With a name like this, it’s clear you’ll be expecting some pretty awesome Happy Hour deals, and if you like wine you should. Housed in a preserved traditional shop house along Telok Ayer (possibly the hippest stretch in the CBD), My Awesome Café is constantly teeming with positive energy and happy vibes, where everyone feels like family – you half expect the staff to burst into song. Contributing to that vibe is their daily Happy Hour, (3pm to 9pm), which offers great discounts on house wines by the bottle, including Chilean, French and Italian vintages at $38. Pretty darned awesome, all right.

A little further down Telok Ayer Street from My Awesome Café is Napoleon, an intimate wine bar where I have vague recollections of many a happy night. Here’s why – being spoilt for choice with 32 wines by the glass at a mere $10 each during their daily Happy Hour (from 3pm to 8pm). I highly recommend the Chateau Gravet Renaissance, Grand Cru St. Emilion, which offers an intensely fruity nose that pairs beautifully with cheese, and the fresh and vibrant Domaine Montmartel, Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2013, which is perfect for the Singapore weather! On the off chance that you might want something other than wine, there is also champagne by the glass – Perrier-Jouët Brut and Mumm Brut at $18/$16 a pop.

One of my favourite craft beer bars is TAP, not just for its amazing range of craft beers (I’m talking over 100 beers with 20 rotating beers on tap), but also its ideal location and superb Happy Hour deals from opening all the way till 8pm. Grab a fresh pint at $10, or a bottled beer at $4 off between noon and 5pm, or $3 off from 5pm to 8pm. I recommend starting with a pint of Lost Coast’s Downtown Brown, or Modern Times’ Fortunate Islands, if you fancy something light and easy to drink. On Tuesdays, everything on the menu is 1-for-1 from 8pm till closing, so come thirsty.

Raffles Hotel Bar & Billiard Room
Taking it up a notch (because we all deserve something a little more fancy every once in a while) is Bar & Billiard Room’s champagne and oysters Happy Hour every Friday from 6pm to 9pm. There’s something about this institution that makes time stand still. It is one of the rare places you can waltz up to the bar solo and savour a little personal time with a glass of exquisite whiskey, or, better yet, champagne. $30 gets you two glasses of Ernest Rapeneau Champagne, with four freshly shucked oysters on the house. I guess it’s meant to be for two guests, but hey, who’s to say you can’t have both?

The Black Swan
Located right in the heart of Raffles Place – it really doesn’t get any more convenient than this – is The Black Swan, an ideal spot to satiate your immediate need for post-work libations without breaking into a sweat. This swanky bistro bar offers a dose of fun and glamour if you’re in need of a quick pick-me-up. House wines are priced at $11 a glass from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays with specialty cocktails priced at $12 from 5pm to 9pm at their mezzanine cocktail lounge, The Powder Room. As for sustenance, enjoy freshly shucked oysters from the Pacific at only $2 apiece or tuck into the kitchen’s menu of more hearty fare.
